CUMS Lunchtime Concerts Committee Applications

Applications are now open to be on the Cambridge University Lunchtime Concerts Committee for 2018-19.

Open to anyone who enjoys attending concerts and would like to find out more about how they are run, this is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in Cambridge’s most prestigious lunchtime concert series. Taking place every Tuesday at 1.10pm in West Road Concert Hall, these concerts showcase the University’s finest performers with a wide variety of repertoire and regularly attract a large audience. The role of the committee is to organise the concerts, including programming the series and inviting performers, as well as ensuring that everything runs smoothly on the day. Becoming part of the CULC committee offers the chance to develop skills and experience in arts management and administration, as well as being enjoyable and rewarding.

There are four roles available, each with varying degrees of commitment:

  • President
  • Concert Manager
  • Publicity
  • Front of House

If you are applying for the role of President, the covering letter should include two suggestions of concert programmes which you think would be suitable for CULC and would attract large audiences. The new President will shadow the current President during Easter term.

Role descriptions


  • Organising and designing the programme for next year’s series. Some concerts will already be fixed in place, but it will be your responsibility to select performers and programmes for most of them
  • Liaising with performers to discuss concert dates and potential repertoire
  • Leading the CULC committee, ensuring that each concert runs smoothly on the day
  • Introducing each concert to the audience
  • Drafting the budget for the series and updating it on a weekly basis
  • Counting the money collected from each concert and paying it into the CUMS account
  • Assisting the Publicity Manager by promoting the concerts online and distributing posters and flyers
  • Representing CULC at CUMS committee meetings.

Applicants should be very organised, diligent and enthusiastic about the series, with excellent attention to detail. They should have a good knowledge of potential concert repertoire and, ideally, Cambridge-based performers.

Concert Manager

  • Booking instruments in advance of the concerts
  • Discussing logistics for each concert with the performers
  • Compiling and printing paper programmes every week
  • Working closely with the President and being able to step in in the event of their absence
  • Assisting the Publicity Manager by promoting the concerts online and distributing posters and flyers.

Publicity Manager

  • Managing the CULC Facebook and Twitter accounts
  • Creating and publicising the Facebook ‘event’ for each concert
  • Organising the distribution of posters and flyers around Cambridge
  • May like to consider other methods of publicity, such as outreach to local schools.

Front of House Manager

  • Recruiting stewards for each concert
  • Welcoming people as they arrive for the concert and handing out programmes
  • Collecting donations as the audience leave the concert
  • Assisting the Publicity Manager by promoting the concerts online and distributing posters and flyers.
